In 1964 she was co-founder with Ellen Jackson of Operation Exodus, a parents' group formed to move black students into empty seats in largely white-populated Boston public schools. She had been associate director of the Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunities (METCO). She received the 1978 NAACP Education Award for her work in educational programs for Boston schools. He -was wounded at Okinawa in 1945 and was discharged as a lieutenant commander in 1946. He returned to teaching at Ohelsea High but retired for health reasons in 1947.
