A new development surfaced yesterday in the case of the two "fired umpires" when it was revealed that Al Salerno has refused to accept an agreement which would reinstate him to the American League, with a raise in pay and full pension benefits. Umpires Salerno and Bill Valentine were fired by American League Pres.
Joe Cronin on Sept. 30, 1968. Cronin said the dismissal was because of "incompetence" but Salerno and Valentine have insisted they were fired because of their activities in helping the AL umpires organize into a union. In an effort to settle the case, the American League and the Major Leagues both umpires had to be parties to it. This agreement called for Salerno and Valentine to open the 1970 season in the high minor leagues.
One umpire was to be assigned to the Texas League and the other to the International League. After putting in two or three months in the minors, Salerno and Valentine were then to be "reviewed" by AL Pres. Cronin and then restored to the League payroll. Moreover, both umpires would each receive a flat sum of $10,000 as compensation for the 1969 season, which they missed. In addition, they would aJso receive full pension credits dating back to when Cronin fired them.
They were also to receive all salary increases which have since been awarded to their fellow-umpires. For example, when Salerno and Valentine were fired they were earning approximately annually. Their salaries would be raised to $20,000 the normal amount for umpires in their experience classification. Jack Reynolds, a Chicago attorney who is the legal counsel for the Umpires indicated disappointment with Salerno's refusal to sign the agreement but said the umpires organization would continue pressing for reinstatement and is about to file a charge of unfair labor practices against the American League. worked out an agreement by which both umpires would be reinstated by the middle of the 1970 season. This agreement was also approved by the National Labor Relations Board which has now assumed, the role of arbitrator. A crucial part of the agreement was that, to be reinstated, Salerno and Valentine would drop two separate suits against baseball totaling approximately $4 million. Valentine agreed to this and so did Salerno. But Salerno admitted to the Chicago Times yesterday he had changed his mind and has instructed his attorneys to continue with litigation.
