Congratulations to the three Bulldogs who will be competing at the NCAA Track and Field Championships next week at historic Hayward Field in Eugene.
Jordyn Bryant (discus AND shot put), Amelia DiPaola (hammer), and Harriett Mortlock (javelin) all punched their tickets to Nationals last week at the West Regionals in Fayetteville.
For those unfamiliar with track and field, this is the equivalent of qualifying for the College World Series, Final Four, or college football playoffs. The top 48 athletes (out of hundreds) are selected from the West region, and East Region. The top 12 competitors for each region punch their tickets to Nationals, where 24 athletes from each event compete for the national title.
Unless I missed a post, I'm shocked I'm the first to post and recognize these ladies for qualifying for the big dance. It's a big deal.
The women's and men's (historically) track teams at Fresno State continually recruit and develop some of the top throwers in the US and internationally year in and year out.
This isn't a knock on anyone, but as a former Bulldog thrower, the lack of support from the university AND community for our track athletes is embarrassing and has been embarrassing for years.
In the current climate of transfer portal and NIL chaos, these track athletes in Fresno don't get much, yet compete at the highest level, all the while representing what it means to be Bulldog Born, Bulldog Bred.

Is men’s track even a scholarship sport at Fresno State? Thought they decided to only make women’s T&F a scholarship sport.

Men's track is not a scholarship sport, but still competes at the Division 1 level.
The men's scholarships were taken away in 2011 or 2012.

Congrats to these three Ladies !!
It's takes a lot of hard work and a major commitment to get to that level. Best of luck in the Championships, let's bring it home, Go Lady Dogs !!
The Lady Dogs have been kicking the Men's Dogs butt in athletics this school year

Unfortunately it will be sports like this that will become less funded as NIL continues to grow.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Unfortunately, T&F in the USA has seen better days. The USATF is a mess has no idea how to grow our sport domestically. Its painful because with how bad T&F is treated, we still churn out the best T&F athletes in the world.
I can only imagine how much bigger USA T&F would be if we had had more support from the powers that be and the public.

There are schools that have made a commitment to invest in all of their sports programs especially track And field. LSU is one of them along with mostly SEC schools which is no surprise. These schools are producing some our best track athletes and are the schools where other nations send their young rising stars to be trained. .

Nothing wrong with throws, but if we could get more points out of the other areas, we would have a chance at winning conference championships. Seems like we have less than a handful of good others (sprints, jumps, distance) everyyear and several good throwers but not enough in one year to win the MW. We have a solid 400m Runner this year which is great but I can't remember when we had a top 100 or 200 runner. Sorry for nerding out here but we hardly ever get Track threads on here and I love the sport.

I care as well but I feel like others won't care if I post about most sports or it will just squander there with zero replies so I don't bother. I wasn't a great coach but I coached throws at the high school level for a year to fill in last minute and threw myself in high school so I follow their results from afar. Part of it is that we already have big fanbases in the US in so many sports, Track and Field is one of those sports only followed during the olympics and frankly usually only if an American is contending in that event thus why we seem to get more eyeballs to Shot Put, a discipline we excel at, compared to Discus which we haven't been great at and Eastern Europe typically dominates. You can easliy see our preference in sports when people gripe about tracks at college stadiums and one of the very few that still has one, Nevada, made a endzone grandstand that makes it unsuitable for meets anyways.

It seems the American women are now excelling in the weight events such as shot put, discus and even hammer throw. The Europeans however still dominate javelin throw. Hard to say what happen to American men because I remember how they used to be strong in discus
I grew up a track fan and was fortunate to have been at track meets to see some of the great icons of track and field compete. I have been following Dogs track team and have seen a dramatic improvement in program last three years.

Some men's sports programs have been devastated as a result of Title IX. FSU sponsors T&F but doesn't offer men's scholarships? How does that make sense? How can you possibly compete for championships without scholarship athletes? And how about wrestling? The Central Valley, specifically the TRAC, is an absolute hot bed of wrestling talent, yet FSU doesn't have a wrestling program? FSU was a national power wrestling program, but we can't even provide opportunities to local talent, what a shame!
The football program subsidizes the entire athletic department, kinda like the NBA subsidizes the WNBA. I fully support women's athletics, but not necessarily at the expense of the men's programs. Wrestling and T&F are amongst the most exciting spectator sports, especially during an Olympic year. The fact that FSU does not financially support these 2 great sports is a travesty and a direct casualty of Title IX, and that has always been a concern. It's difficult to see the fairness in all of this, IMHO.
Hopefully, the next AD will have the courage to do a "look-in" to reassess Title IX to assure fairness for the male athlete opportunities too! Considering that Title IX was put into law over 50 years ago, and considering that the objectives have been achieved, is it really necessary to continue to restrict men's programs? Does fairness only apply to women's athletics?

Now that schools will be obligated to pay their athletes, and with NIL monies skyrocketing, they can do away with all scholarships? No scholarships, no need for title IX? Or am I being naive?

We should have never added wrestling before giving men’s track scholarships, mistake #1.
And unfortunately, title 9 is technically fair. IMO football should be excluded, that would make it the most fair but that won’t happen

The absolute worst consequence of Title IX in the history of FSU athletics was the death of the wrestling program. Wrestling, under Hall of Fame coach Dennis DeLiddo, was arguably the most decorated program in FSU history. He has more wins than any coach in FSU history. Wrestling is the only FSU team program to be ranked at years end in the National Top 25, 11 times! His program was dominant in conference competition (comparable to a Boise State of Wrestling type level) produced All Americans, National Champions and an Olympic Medalist!
Considering that the Central Valley is one of the best recruiting areas in the entire country, right at our front door, and FSU doesn't provide opportunities to those young men, just seems like wasted opportunities on so many levels.
Wrestling has massive national popularity and would provide another opportunity to promote the entire university and the city of Fresno, on a national level. Unfortunately, under the threat of Title IX, the leaders of FSU have deceided that fielding a women's water polo team, or a women's equestrian team competing in Texas, was more important/more fair than continuing our national powerhouse wrestling program. Another wasted opportunity!
