LOUIS POST-DISPATCH SPORTS 5D 0 Updyke's Play Is SlUE's New Calling Card der Logan brought Updyke back to Trying To Juggle NFL, KDNL Might Drop Ball Again Sunday RON COBB TENNIS Kyler Updyke is more than just the top tennis player at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. He's doing double duty as a recruiter for coach Bill Logan. DAN CAESAR MEDIA VIEWS The programming folks at KDNL are finding out what their counterparts at KMOV knew for the past six years no matter what you do with the National Football League, you're going to Updyke has been making the statement that tennis is alive and well at SIUE.

On Oct. 2, he won the Rolex MidAmerican Regional Champi-o i in VI vj iA Tennis Club; community Carl Walker; tennis family of yearj Napolean and Alyce Meadors; junior female player, Laura Guignon; junior male player, Chris Wolken; adult male player, Toby Clark; female adult player, Traci Jesse; junior tourna ment, Gateway Invitational; adult; tournament, Bud Simpson Prize Money; outstanding umpire, Sharon McNeil; contributor to USTA youth tennis, Alan Mitchell; contributor to; USTA player development program; Brian Mathiot; contributor to USTA Adult League program, Jim Monika. The U.S. Tennis Association has recognized St. Louis as its National Junior Tennis League Chapter of the Year, with kudos going to director Carl Walker and chapter president Leigh Strassner.

World TeamTennis has added Schenectady, N.Y., as an expansion team for next season. Other sites being considered include Cleveland; Nashville, Omaha, and Springfield, Mo. St. Louis Country Club pro Dick Johnson and former St. Louisan Jimmy Parker helped the U.S.

team win the runner-up trophy in the Fred Per; ry Cup for players 50 and over recently in Buenos Aires. The Ameri' cans defeated Sweden, Ireland and Brazil before losing to France in the final. After the Perry Cup, Johnson stayed in Buenos Aires and finished second to Parker in the International Tennis Federation World Senior Championships' 50-over division. make enemies. KDNL is in line to make more this weekend.

The KMOV programmers at least seemed to have a plan. They went with the Edwardsville, where he has one season of eligibility left. In the Rolex tournaments, he sensed that a lot was riding on his matches. "There was a lot of pressure because it was my first year back," he said, "and I hadn't played many tournaments in the last year. And I knew Bill wanted me to do well not only for me but for his recruiting and the future of the team." Updyke originally came to SIUE because of Holden and the university's tennis tradition.

Early on, Holden had made him aware that Ken Flach and Rob Seguso had played at SIUE arid that the Cougars once won seven consecutive Division II national championships. Updyke hopes to make a living with his racket, either as a player or as a coach or instructor. But first he'll have one more chance to win an NCAA national championship. He was a Division II doubles semifinalist in 1992 and a finalist in '93. Elsewhere: The Missouri Valley announced the following 1994 award winners: Outstanding Junior Tournament: Sunset Tennis Center's Gateway Invitational.

Outstanding Contributor to Player Development: Sunset's Doug Smith. Adult Player of the Year: Toby Clark. Inductees in the Missouri Valley Hall of Fame: Earl "Butch" Buchholz and the late Wray Brown. Then there were the annual St. Louis District awards: facility of year, Dwight Davis Center; member organization of year, West Chester were roaming the KDNL airwaves.

Lately, the Cardinals have swooped down and taken over. Presumably, those are the teams with strong local interest. But this Sunday, when the Cardinals play against the Bears, Channel 30 plans to air the Philadelphia-Atlanta game instead. (Fox affiliates can show only one game this Sunday. NBC affiliates have the doubleheader this week.) The Bears-Cardinals would seem to be the logical choice for a big local Neilsen number.

But Channel 30 programming director Mark Culbertson said his station decided to go with the Philadelphia game to avoid confusion. "The network threw us Philadelphia-Atlanta, although we had wanted Chicago-Arizona," Culbertson said. "At the last moment early this week they called and finally offered us Chicago-Arizona." KDNL decided to stay with the original plan because Channel 30 has switched games at a late hour twice in recent weeks. Culbertson said that led to much viewer frustration, because fans were given a game other than the one on their TV schedules. "We had a game listed at noon this Sunday Philadelphia-Atlanta, and a movie at 3 o'clock.

For the sake of accuracy, we decided to stay with what we had this time," he said. The Bears-Cardinals game begins at 3 p.m. If a switch was made, those tuning in at noon for football would be seeing the movie "Aliens," and those joining at 3 p.m. for the movie would be watching football. Money Doesn't Talk: Considering the enormous amount of money Fox paid to pry the NFL away from CBS (more than $1.5 billion over four years), one would think its affiliates would do everything possible to maneuver the game with the best ratings potential onto the air.

The Cardinals-Bears easily qualifies in this market. Both teams are proven ratings winners. But before lambasting Channel 30's people, it's important to remember the station simply is inexperienced at drawing up NFL schedules. The most feasible solutions to the problem would be for KDNL to begin telling the TV listings people to include a line "game and time subject to change" and bite the bullet one more time and switch on Sunday. Mehlville High makes its first appearance in a state football title game on Saturday, and also makes its statewide television debut.

St. Louis-based One On One Productions purchased TV rights to the game, and has put together a five-market network that will show the Panthers' Class 5A championship game against Jefferson City at noon Saturday. KSDK (Channel 5) picks up the contest locally. KSDK sportscaster Trey Wingo is scheduled to do the play-by-play with Hazelwood East coach Rick Gorzynski providing commentary and Channel 5 sportscaster Frank Cusumano reporting from the sidelines. The game also will be shown in Kansas City, ColumbiaJefferson City, Cape Girardeau and Joplin.

Indianapolis, and at October's end, he finished fifth in Division II in the Rolex National Small College Championships in Ed-mond, Okla. Logan knows that a strong showing by Updyke helps get the word out that the Cougars are coming back from the abyss that nearly swallowed them last year, when SIUE almost chucked the tennis program. Coach Dan Holden had assembled possibly the strongest team in Division II, but the program's problems sent him packing to Southwestern Louisiana University. Three of the Cougars' four Division II Ail-Americans left school, including Updyke. He went back home to the Cincinnati area for a year to weigh his options.

If SIUE folded the program, Updyke might have followed Holden to Louisiana. But the resuscitation un Cardinals for almost five years after the team left St. Louis before the 1988 season. Then when Big Red ratings dipped, they switched to the "best game available" theory, although they never hesitated to put the Cards on again if they were in an attractive game. The Chicago Bears also had a foothold.

Still, no matter which way Channel 4 programming director Jim Rothschild went, he'd make a group of fans angry because they wanted to watch a game other than the one he picked. But KMOV no longer has to make those decisions. CBS, its parent network, lost its NFL telecasting rights this season to the Fox Network. Channel 30, the local Fox affiliate, seems unsure of how to handle the NFL. "I thank God and my parents for being selfless people and risking their lives for me," he said.

"I'm so grateful to them and God." In high school, he was a member of the water polo team, taking up football totally by accident. "I asked the football coach if it was all right to lift weights," Pourdanesh said. "He said to me, 'Aren't you playing for Pourdanesh was recruited by the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, where he earned All-America status in 1991 as a junior. Bypassed in the 1993 National Football League draft, Pourdanesh was invited to the Cleveland Browns' camp as a free agent, but he was a late cut. Pourdanesh returned to school, obtained his marketing degree and began working towards his masters.

But a big void still existed in his life, at least until he got a call from his agent about Baltimore's CFL club. With Pourdanesh and Co. leading the way, running back Mike Pringle rushed for a league-record 1,972 yards this season. Pourdanesh, 24, is the East nominee as the league's top offensive lineman. "This has been one of the best years of my life," Pourdanesh said.

"It's amazing how things turn around." VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) Shahriar Pourdanesh was the first Baltimore player on the practice field Wednesday, keeping a date with tradition: He and teammate Neal Fort were about to face fellow offensive linemen Hohn Earle and Mark Borrelli in a 2-on-2 showdown. "I can't talk long," said Pourdanesh, a 6-foot-6, 290-pound tackle. "Got a big game coming up. Offensive linemen usually don't get a lot of glory, so when we're alone, we get a 2-on-2 game going to have some fun. And ever since we started doing it, we've been successful, so we're not going to change the formula." What a formula.

In less than one year, Baltimore has gone from being just another expansion team to the Canadian Football League's model franchise. It leads the league in attendance and last week took it into a new era by becoming the first American club to advance to the Grey Cup final. Pourdanesh has even more to be thankful for. When he was a child, Pourdanesh and his family fled their native Iran. Pourdanesh's father was a high-ranking official when the Shah was in power, but was forced to flee to Germany with the rise of Ayatollah Khomeini.
