instructions for converting all of your DRM’d Kindle books into a non-DRM format that you can read on any number of devices.

Migrating from Kindle to iBooks I started off reading eBooks from the Amazon Kindle store. As time has progressed, I’ve found myself using my physical Kindle less and less. Partly because I forget to charge it, and partly because I can never get the lighting in my favorite reading locations quite right. And at night? Forget about it. So I’ve converted all of my Kindle purchases to ePubs for use in iBooks. I could use the Kindle app for iOS but I’ve found iBooks to be faster at syncing read position, and it feels a lot more natural to use. Read more

O’Reilly Safari subscription

A Safari subscription gives access to a huge library of technical books and videos. This is invaluable to someone learning a new programming language or trying to write the next big iPhone game. Safari’s monthly subscription cost is less than the price of a single printed programming book. I’ve had access to Safari at a few jobs, and the large selection of searchable books made jumping into a new project much less daunting. Price: $28/month (Link)

The Do’s and Don’ts of Online Publicity

There’s a question that has been bugging me for years: why are 99% of publicists and promotion/marketing people complete useless failures when it comes to blogs and online outlets? I keep waiting for the industry to figure things out and catch up, but it never seems to happen. So I’m taking the time to write this guide. If you work in online PR or know someone who does, this is a must-read — NOT because my observations here are anything other than obvious to the bloggers and editors you’re targeting, but because they’re clearly not obvious, or even known, to Read more

Final Cut Pro X myths busted

When Final Cut Pro X was released, a thousand editors suddenly cried out in terror. Far from being silenced, however, the noise continued as a rolling grumble, audible as background noise to this day. At release, FCP X was far from perfect, but it’s changed. While many (not all!) of the feature gaps have been plugged since release, there is still hear the same old criticisms levelled against it. To halt further misinformation, here’s rebuttal to a huge list of perceived, overheard, incorrect criticisms of Final Cut Pro X, and a few workarounds and solutions to genuine issues. 1. Read more

Innovation in documentary- MIT

Defining documentary has never been easy, all the more because of different cultural traditions. The English-speaking world often looks back to the British documentarian John Grierson’s definition of the form as ‘the creative treatment of actuality’ — a useful phrase that he first used to describe Robert Flaherty’s Moana, but one that inadvertently wedded the documentary project to the linear narrative. Other cultures have used other descriptors, embracing radically different types of filmmaking in their understanding of the documentary. Today’s interactive documentaries compel us to revisit our assumptions. We take an expansive view of documentary, and are above all interested Read more

CREATING AN ARTIST WEBSITE, or The Art of Storytelling

One of the most common misunderstandings artists have about websites is the idea that an online virtual gallery or portfolio can function as a comprehensive marketing strategy. I often read articles encouraging artists to simply develop an online portfolio to drive audiences (and potential buyers) toward their works. Unfortunately, the internet is so saturated with images, audio, texts and videos that creative manifestations without context can easily become engulfed in the abyss of the World Wide Web. Creating your successful artist website is not about simply displaying art. It’s about engaging your site visitors through a compelling story about you Read more

Woodworking service London

Our background is in fine art but our roots are in woodworking To say we are a family firm is perhaps stretching a point: our small company feels like a family and our family’s roots are embedding deeply in manufacturing tradition. We both left the north of England to study fine art in London: Tim at Chelsea and Roddy at Central Saint Martins and the Slade school. After graduating we became involved in the London art Read more

Quotes & Accents (& Dashes) We all need to use them but hardly any of us know how to type them. Here is a brief guide of how to type smart quotes and accented characters (and dashes) on a Mac. If you have the latest OS you probably discovered that you can also find accented characters by holding down a letter to reveal its spicier cousins (I discovered this myself many times when attempting to type “heeeeeyyyyy” in an iChat window.). If you’re on a Windows computer or some nerdy space machine, I’d recommend googling “keyboard commands for accented characters”. Read more
