How to make hairspray– DIY recipe

I love finding ways to make over some of my favorite health and beauty supplies. My latest quest was eliminating hair spray from my monthly grocery bill. I never dreamed it would be so easy to make homemade hairspray and the results would work so well!

For just pennies, I was able to cross one more item off my list of things I am doing to Learn to Live Without Walmart. Plus, when I looked at the list of ingredients in my old time favorite brand of hairspray I was shocked to think I had been spraying all those chemicals in my hair for years.

These were the ingredients in my favorite brand:

Hairspray Ingredients: SD Alcohol 40-B, Water, Isopropyl Alcohol, VA/Crotonates/Vinyl Neodecanoate Copolymer, Octylacrylamide/Acrylates/Butylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer, Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Aminomethyl Propanol, Lauryl Pyrrolidone, Methyl Gluceth-20, Cyclopentasiloxane, Masking Fragrance.

So for just a few pennies for a 16 ounce spray bottle I still can get my hair to stay where I want it and I am no longer spraying garbage in and around my head.

How to make DIY hairspray:

  • 1.5 cups distilled or boiled water
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of vodka

Instructions

  1. Boil water and dissolve sugar in it.
  2. Allow to cool to room temp and add alcohol.
  3. Store in a spray bottle.

I have been extremely happy with the results of this makeover product; I just wish I had tried it years ago!

grear idea!! Can’t wait to try it!!
I do have a couple questions though.
How does it work in high humidity?
And do you ever have problems with
any insects?? Silly question I know but
Bees and all things stingy hunt me
    down already.

    Thanks!

Deb I have not used this spray in high humidity yet since I just made it a short while ago. I am happy with the results so far and can’t wait to see how it holds up to our SC summers!

      Susie,

I know it is hard to believe that this works so well, but I am really loving it. I have it in my hair right now. I don’t find it sticky at all. I know a couple times I put too much on and it stayed wet looking so I have found a light spray works best.

Please remember that alcohol in any form on your hair will lighten color on your hair.

I am going to try this with honey instead of sugar. Honey is known to seal moisture into your hair so I think it will work well for my curly hair. I will let you know how it turns out!

Can you use rubbing alcohol instead of vodka?

Sandy I am sorry but I have only made it with vodka so I am not sure how rubbing alcohol would work. If you try it out please post and let us know how it works. Others may wonder the same thing.

Brilliant! I think I’ll give this a try. With 3 females in my house we seem to go through alot of hairspray. I think I’ll add a few drops of lavendar EO for scent as well!
