Easy Homemade Ketchup Recipe

1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
3 Tbsp. sugar
very small dash of cinnamon
1 Tbsp. plus 1 tsp. vinegar

Pour tomato sauce into a small saucepan and boil away some of the water until it begins to thicken. Add the sugar, cinnamon and vinegar. Simmer for 3 to 4 minutes longer. Refrigerate. Warning: Go easy on the cinnamon because it’s easy to put in too much. Then every time you eat it you’re thinking “cinnamon” instead of “ketchup.”

When I buy oranges or onions in a mesh bag, I use the mesh bag to wash dishes with. I cut off the plastic parts and use the mesh. I also keep a bottle of
3 Tbs. of vinegar and water to disinfect the shower, toilet and counter tops.
It is great for my wooden floors also. I even put a cup of vinegar in the wash
to take out all the scum from the soap. When I have a sore throat or a cold, I take 2 Tbs. of apple cider vinegar to cup of warm water. I gargle, then I drink a mouthful and repeat til the water is all gone. If I still feel sick I
will repeat this every half hour til the sore throat goes away……

Yes you can Rachel, you may have to add about a half of can (tomato paste can) of water to make it less thick is all. I interchange the two all the time. Tomato paste is just thicker then the sauce so adding water makes it just right.

How long will this last in the fridge?

This lasts as long as regular ketchup that has been opened and stored in the fridge lasts. It has an acid base like pickles so it will last almost forever in the fridge. Like I said it lasts the same as regular but what is nice about this is you can make as little or much as you want so if you are a single you can make up a smaller amount if you need to.

I have 3 of the #10 cans of tomato sauce and would love to do a large canning of ketchup or even spaghetti sauce for storage. Do you have a recipe to can the ketchup – either pressure can or water bath??

Alesia I don’t see why you can’t can it. I would use a water bath. I make bbq sauce and can it. Sounds interesting I wonder is you use just a small pinch of cinn. I may have to try this next time i’m out of ketchup. I live 30 miles from town and i’m not driving to go get some!

I know when we first started using the recipe I thought the cinnamon was unusual but it tastes really good. It is just enough to make it have a real ketchup flavor without tasting like cinnamon.

I can all the time! I often double or triple a recipe so i am able to can some. This would be easy to can in a hot water bath.

I’m guessing you are using cider vinegar?

No regular vinegar. Usually when a recipe says vinegar it is regular vinegar. When it uses cider vinegar we will say cider vinegar because the 2 are not always inter changeable especially in recipes.

does it work with cherry tomatoes

You would have to use a different recipe because this calls for tomato paste or sauce so it would be more involved using fresh tomatoes
