Has there ever been a Super Bowl three-peat?

No NFL team has ever won three consecutive Super Bowls.

In fact, no team in NFL history has even reached the Super Bowl stage after winning two championships in a row.

The Chiefs will look to make history when they defend their Super Bowl title in the 2024 season.

Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Andy Reid on the Chiefs' potential three-peat

"It [would be] legendary,'' Mahomes told ESPNon the idea of a three-peat.

"No one's ever done it and we knew it's legendary to win back-to-back. I think eight other teams have done it. We had heard it all week. We had talked to the guys [who had gone back-to-back] about it and we felt like we had the best opportunity that we had ever had to go out there and do that.

"We've got to continue to play our best football," Mahomes said. "We'll celebrate these next few weeks and then we'll get right back at it. ... To be able to have our stamp on this great NFL history is something that I'll never take for granted.''

Kelce addressed the Chiefs' shot at history during the heat of their championship celebration.

"The goal has always been to get three. But we couldn't get here without getting the two and having that target on our back all year," Kelce said during his postgame speech.

"We get a chance to do it three times in a row. How do you get excited for that? You go party in Las Vegas and then get back to work."

Reid was practical when asked about the Chiefs' chances of making history, quickly citing how the level of competition should be higher in the division next season.

"We've got a great competition in the AFC West and we just had some hirings, coaching hirings, and these guys are good football coaches,'' Reid told ESPN, hinting at the Chargers landing Jim Harbaugh and the Raiders committing to Antonio Pierce.

"So it's not going to just be easy. That's not how this thing rolls. We'll have changeover on our team, which every team has, so you don't know what's there. There's a whole lot of unexpected and you got to keep battling through it, have a good offseason and then a good training camp, and then that ball's shaped kind of funny. It's got to bounce for you in the right direction.

"... You go back to your dark room and the film and the draft coming up and the combine, those things, that's kind of where you go. You're not talking three-peat.''

History of back-to-back Super Bowl winners

The Chiefs were just the ninth team in NFL history to claim back-to-back Super Bowl titles with their win over the 49ers.

They are the first team to win consecutive Super Bowls in two decades, last accomplished by Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and the Patriots in Super Bowls 38 and 39.

Kansas City also solidified itself as the NFL's next dynasty, becoming the fourth franchise to collect three Super Bowls in a five-year span.

New England did it twice, winning in 2002, '04 and '05, and again in 2015, '17 and '19. The Cowboys did it with championships in 1993, '94 and '96, while the Steelers won four Super Bowls in six years from 1975, '76, '79 and '80.

But even during those all-time great runs by some of the best teams in NFL history, no one has ever reached the Super Bowl with an opportunity to win three in a row.
