Would you say that I am calm?Or would you call me hot-headed?Do I take things in my stride or do I stress out unnecessarily?Interestingly I was talking with Clare Downham the other day and I started to reflect on how I come across. If you think I am calm as in Zen, then I must be good at hiding all the negative emotions that are inherent in a creative life. My first job after leaving art college was in a call centre, building up interpersonal skills and learning how to communicate with customers. My login to the mainframe computer system was RD90 and the tech guys assigned my password as ZEN. Yes after just one day in the job they had made up their minds that I was laidback. In fact, laidback Luke bacame my pet name. Don’t get me wrong, I always give my heart and soul to any project that I’m involved in, it must be that I have become skilled at hiding the anxiety and fears that bubble beneath the surface. One dictionary defines Zen: a state of calm attentiveness in which one's actions are guided by intuition rather than by conscious effort. I’ll happily take that.
