I wasn't a tea lover for the longest time, and now I know that's because I didn't know how to make it! (Also, FYI I only drink herbal teas, so I don't drink green, white, Oolong or black tea.)

First of all, there are some varieties that are just plain boring or gross and I don't like them, no matter how hard I try. But there are some that are very dull on their own, then if you add a few simple ingredients, they become amazing drinks!

Then there are some that are nice on their own with a little bit of sweetener. I haven't found too many of those, honestly. The only one I love is red raspberry leaf tea. You'll have to let me know about all of your favorite flavorful teas!

In the fall, I discovered this recipe for pumpkin spice rooibos latte and was so taken aback that something THIS delicious could be made from an herbal tea! Especially one that, when I tried in high school almost ten years ago, totally disgusted me. It's definitely at the top of my favorite tea recipes list.

My love for tea lattes began to bloom.

So I made up this chocolate mint one! It's a very simple recipe, but I really enjoy it, and I hope you do too! Chocolate tea, I mean... come on!

I'm excited to make an iced tea version when the hot weather hits, as well. We'll see if it surpasses my iced hibiscus tea as my favorite summer drink!

Is Chocolate Mint Tea GOod for You?

With very few ingredients and all of them being simple and natural ingredients, chocolate mint tea is a clean drink!

Filtered water - We use a Berkey water filter to purify our water. It retains the beneficial minerals in the water and removes all the junk! Read my full review here. Use boiling water to steep the tea, of course.

Mint - There are many proven health benefits of having a cup of mint tea, some of them being improved energy, improved sleep, relieved sore throat, menstrual cramps, headaches, sinus congestion and more! So it's a great drink to have when you are experiencing these issues, but also good as a nightly cup of tea or just whenever you feel like it.

Cocoa - Rich in polyphenols, antioxidants that are also found in some fruits and vegetables! These polyphenols may reduce blood pressure, reduce inflammation generally, improve heart health and blood flow to the brain.

Maple syrup - High in sugar, as we know, but we use as little as possible in this recipe to still yield a delicious result. You can also use more or less, depending on your preference. Maple syrup is natural and also contains a small number of vitamins and minerals.

Sea salt - Brings out the chocolate and mint flavors.

Coconut milk - Coconut milk is a rich, creamy substitute for dairy, but it’s very enjoyable even if you can drink cow’s milk! Normally it imparts a coconut flavor to whatever it’s added to, but since we use lite coconut milk, it's not at all noticeable in this recipe.

Coconut milk is high in fats and many vitamins and minerals, including copper, manganese, selenium, iron and folate. It may improve heart health, reduce inflammation and fight viruses!

Look for high-quality coconut milk with minimal additives and without BPA (a chemical that can lead to cancer and reproductive issues) in the can lining.Thisis a good option. Hint: If it costs $0.88 for a can, it’s probably not the best brand to buy…

You can also use another dairy-free milk, cow's milk or cream if you have no issues with dairy!

Cocoa butter - The fat that comes from cocoa beans. It's high in fatty acids, and contains decent amounts of Vitamin E, choline, Vitamin K and more. As such, it can improve bone health and support vision, brain, skin, reproductive health and more!

What Does Chocolate Mint Tea Taste Like?

It's mint flavor with a decent hint of chocolatey flavor and sweetness. The flavors in a tea are meant to be gentle and delicate, not rich and strong. Don't expect it to be mint hot chocolate, because that's not what we're going for here!

What Kind of Mint Can I Use?

There are many different types of mint and you can use any you'd like! Peppermint leaves, spearmint leaves, or even... fresh chocolate mint leaves! Yes, that is a thing. Definitely the best option for chocolate mint tea, but any variety of mint will be delicious.

I recommend using fresh mint leaves if possible, because they are just better than store-bought loose tea leaves or tea bags. However, you can totally use a mint tea bag and it will turn out great.

Did you know that it's really easy to grow your own mint? Mint is a perennial, so it will come back year after year, and it's very resilient. You need to contain it, though, or your yard could quickly be overrun! Freeze or dehydrate extra to preserve and use it through the winter. Find more useful tips on growing mint here.

What Kind of Sweetener Can I Use?

Any type of sweetener, whether liquid or granulated will work great. I use maple syrup because I love it's flavor and that it's a natural substance, but feel free to use honey, coconut sugar, brown sugar, etc.

Can I Substitute Cacao Powder for Cocoa Powder?

Cocoa and cacao powder are very similar, but cacao is stronger and more bitter, so you may want to use less of it, then test to see if you'd like to add more.
