These healthy chocolate chip oatmeal cookies are soft and chewy, with chocolate in every bite. They are very easy to make and contain just 4 ingredients. They don’t contain any flour, eggs, dairy or butter.
I have been wanting to make a healthier chocolate chip cookie lately and this one really hits the spot. The cookie is full of oats and chocolate in every bite. The cookie dough is also healthier than traditional oatmeal cookies. The only added sugar is in the dark chocolate chips.
Ingredients
- Rolled Oats
- Bananas
- Peanut Butter
- Dark Chocolate Chips
Rolled oats: Rolled oats are also known as old fashioned oats and are the base for the oatmeal cookie. They give the cookies their soft and chewy texture.
Bananas: You will want to use very ripe bananas which are easier to mash and sweeter. The oatmeal cookies are naturally sweetened with bananas. Bananas can be substituted with applesauce but the cookies won’t be as sweet.
Peanut butter: Peanut butter replaces regular butter, giving the cookies richness. This recipe uses natural peanut butter which is peanut butter that has no added oils. Look for creamy peanut butter that has only peanuts and salt listed in the ingredients. Peanut butter can be substituted with almond butter.
Dark chocolate chips: I used dark chocolate chips since they have less sugar than semisweet or milk chocolate chips. However, if you find dark chocolate to be too bitter, you can substitute it with your favorite type of chocolate.
How to Make Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies
The mashed bananas and peanut butter are first mixed together until uniform. The rolled oats are then stirred in. Finally, the chocolate chips are mixed in.
Use a 3 tablespoon cookie scoop to scoop the cookie dough and place onto a lined baking sheet. You will then need to flatten the cookie dough into round disks because the cookies do not spread during baking. Bake the cookies for about 18 minutes or until done.
Cookie Texture
The cookies have a soft and chewy texture. They are a bit richer than my other healthy oatmeal cookie recipes so they taste more like cookies. If you bake them a little longer, the edges will also be a little crispy. I like eating them while they are still warm so that the chocolate is still melted.

Ingredients
- 3/4 cup (181 g) finely mashed bananas
- 1/4 cup (64 g) natural creamy peanut butter
- 1 1/4 cups (111 g) rolled oats
- 1/2 cup (82 g) dark chocolate chips
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking sheet.
Add mashed bananas and peanut butter to a large mixing bowl. Stir with a spatula until they are evenly combined and the mixture is uniform.
Stir in the oats until they are evenly mixed and coated.
Finally add in the chocolate chips and stir until they are evenly distributed.
Using a 3 tbsp cookie scoop, scoop up cookie dough and release onto your prepared baking sheet. Space the dough balls about 1.5 inches apart. Use the back of a metal spoon to press down on each cookie dough ball so that it forms a thick round disk. Smooth and round the sides of the cookie disks if desired. The cookies will not spread or rise during baking so you want to shape the cookies to how you want the final outcome to be.
Bake cookies for about 17-20 minutes or until edges turn a light golden brown and cookies look cooked. You can cook them 1-2 extra minutes until edges are a medium golden brown if you want crispy edges on the cookies. Let cookies cool on baking sheet before removing them with a cookie spatula.
Notes
- This recipe uses natural peanut butter which is peanut butter that has no added oils.
- See post for ingredient substitutions.
- You can also make the cookies smaller. I have made them as 2 tbsp cookies as well.
