You can find offset measurement embossed at the back of the wheel. It's either on the mounting plate or on the spoke's rear. It often ends with the letters "ET," but it can also be in the beginning. So, both ET45 and 45ET mean 45 mm offset.

If you currently have tires, there's no need to measure your rims. Simply look for the tire size code and go from there. If you just have empty rims that you need to measure, you may be able to find the dimensions somewhere along a back spoke along with the factory numbers or engraved into the inside of the barrel.

First, start with the wheel size for your vehicle. You can find that on the sidewall of the tires on your original wheels or the inside frame of the driver's door. PCD stands for Pitch Circle Diameter which basically means the diameter of an imaginary circle running through the centre of each bolt hole. The most common PCD values are 100mm and 114.3mm, the difference arising due to manufacturers using metric or imperial measurements (4.5 inches = 114.3mm).

While the numbers are different, the wheels themselves feature the same exact bolt pattern. So if you're on the hunt for 5x4. 5 wheels and someone says you really need a 5x114. 3, you'll know that you're both talking about the same thing.

It's very important to get this right, because a wheel with the wrong offset can rub and cause problems with your suspension, brakes, and even body parts, like fenders. If you're willing to make further modifications to accommodate those parts, you have more flexibility.

Where is the offset stamped on a rim? ›

By far, most of wheel brands will stamp the offset number on either the mounting centre or on one of the alloy wheel spokes.

Zero Offset: The wheel's mounting surface is bang in the middle. Picture a pancake on a plate - the center of the pancake matches the center of the plate. Positive Offset: The mounting surface is closer to the front (the outside edge) of the wheel. This means the wheel is tucked in more towards the body of the car.

Diameter. This is the diameter of the wheel on its own, not the tyre and wheel together. And it's always measured in inches. Regular road cars generally have wheels that are between 14 and 21 inches in diameter, with newer, sportier, and more luxurious cars generally having the larger sizes.

Each rim model has its own designation, which is assigned by the manufacturer. You can find it on the rim - it's often stamped on the inside of the rim , for example on one of the spokes.
